This is episode 10 of our podcast, the mental side of performance, but first quick news news, flash college football, 2020 33 games already postponed or canceled due to COVID-19 seven games last week alone. Most of the postponements coming as a result of contact tracing protocols that require players to quarantine for 14 days for 14 days or quarantine. If they’ve been in high risk contact with someone who has tested positive for the Corona virus, some teams such as Florida, Missouri, Houston, Memphis Vaylor, Florida, Atlantic, Virginia tech, Arkansas state, Charlotte rice have already experienced multiple game disruptions. Now a pair of sec programs have been hit hard and forced to postpone games. Both Vanderbilt and Florida had numerous positive cases out of week seven and were forced to delay games against Missouri and LSU.

Speaker 2 (01:36):

The sec left it open week before the conference championship game as a buffer for make-up games that will now be in use by four teams on December 12th, new power rankings. And I say power rankings with a question Mark teams from the five conferences, not yet playing in the 2020 season are now eligible for the NCAA power rankings. Beginning this week, there’ll be 127 FBS teams playing this season. All at New Mexico state old dominion and Yukon, Ohio state made the biggest jump this week. Number one, Clemson, number two, Alabama. Number three, Georgia. After a slug fist with the tie Ohio state zero and zero is ahead of undefeated Notre Dame at five. So again, Clemson won Alabama to Georgia three Ohio state yet to play four and Notre Dame five. The lightest scrimmage is powered by ODI football camp. Tell him coach Kwik sent you this past week, the Tennessee Titans one and overtime 42 to 36 against the one in five Houston, Texas who had fired their coach the week before. But all a week before the Titans were coming to their game against the Ford old bills with very little practice, following a bi-week and a COVID outbreak that prevented them from practicing for nearly two weeks, no one gave the Titans a chance, but they doubted the bills 42 to 16.

Speaker 2 (03:46):

What was the difference? Same team, physically, both winks, but a lion Slayer one week and a team that allowed their opponent to have every opportunity for victory. The next, I believe there are five ingredients that affect performance skill sport-specific proficiency under pressure, physical, the efficiency of the body’s systems, intellectual football IQ, situational intuition, and processing character character simply put means determination. It’s the care factor? How much do you really care? And the fifth mental expertise or mindfulness Greg Coughlin with the Pacific Institute. And I have collaborated on the significance of these ingredients to football, Greg and his colleagues at the Pacific Institute correlate these ingredients to the corporate performance as well. Mental practice is the cognitive rehearsal of a physical skill without movement, similar to the zoom sessions, the Titans experience in preparation for the bills, the journal of human movement studies outlined a study done with basketball players group one shot 35 shots a day for seven days, group two performed mental reps with auditory instruction lying in a dark room for seven days and group three performed crossword puzzles for seven days.

Speaker 2 (05:17):

Each group performed a pre-test with very similar results, but after seven days of the test, the crossword group did not improve significantly, but the shooting group and the group in the dark, both improved by 20% or more, this helps account for the, remember the Titans remarkable performance against the bills, but why the near disaster a week later versus the leaderless texts, football IQ and mental expertise, accentuate cognitive preparedness and processing football IQ and mental expertise, accentuate cognitive preparation and processing. It is mindfulness that determines consistency. The ability to stay in the moment to shut out all the peripheral noise versus the bills. The Titans were locked in versus the Texans. They were overwhelmed by the noise. I often use a concentration grid with my players, a concentration grid, which is a random distribution of numbers on a page under the pressure of time and the added distraction of teammates who did it in hollering.

Speaker 2 (06:27):

The player must eliminate numbers in sequential order. So what is the significance of this activity? I had a kicker that normally would average 14 to 17 numbers every single week, but on one game day, when I collected the papers, he had eliminated the noise, the distractions, and he scored a 33 doubling his average score. And he did the same several hours later with the clock ticking down inside of a minute in the fourth quarter, and with the deafening roar of the crowd, he nodded to the holder, the ball was snapped and the rest is history. As he kicked a record setting game winning field goal is not always the elite athlete that wins, but when chaos rears its ugly head, the moment is often seized by mental rather than physical strength. Thanks for joining me to consider the effect of mind on performance. I look forward to talking again next week. God bless.
